Born in 1976, I grew up in the canton Uri, a lovely place in the heart of Switzerland. Having my Swiss roots in a farmers and small companies environment, I discovered the region of Lavaux on the shores of lake Geneva during a summer job in a wine culture. Amazing landscape, no doubt. And nice people, even though they classify me as "un Swiss primitive" - a warm french expression I keep smiling about. Two years later, I returned to the lake of Geneva for studying microengineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne. The place in western Europe for this kind of studies - and some more - I would like to emphasize. In spring 2003 I obtained my diploma and got awarded for the best diploma and diploma work grades.
Prof. Theo Lasser convinced me to stay in his laboratory at EPFL and became my Ph.D. supervisor at the Laboratoire d'Optique Biomédicale (LOB), where I investigated novel methods for single molecule detection on surfaces. In summer 2007, I finally obtained my Ph.D. in natural sciences. As there was quite some work left over, I spent another few months at LOB as a post-doctoral fellow. In spring 2008, I became a fellow of the Max Planck society and was granted a post-doctoral Alexander von Humboldt fellowship. Prof. Stefan W. Hell hosted me in his NanoBiophotonics laboratory at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany, where I investigated fluorescence super-resolution microscopy and spectroscopy. An excellent experience I would not miss.
Back in autumn 2008, I cofounded Aďmago SA, a LOB spin-off company developing laser Doppler imaging instruments for research and medicine. Returned to Lausanne two years later, I am currently a scientific collaborator of Prof. Theo Lasser at LOB, EPFL and a scientific collaborator of Aďmago.
As an Alexander-von-Humboldt scholar and former Ph.D. student at EPFL, I am registered as alumni in the Humboldt network and the EPFL alumni network. From time to time, I am commenting news on www.heise.de.
